Un mundo de títeres en El Retiro
One year ago, the official house of puppets in El Retiro, closed its doors for improvement works. Since then, children and adults could not longer enjoy this world of fantasy of fun in Retiro. But, today, we bring you great news: this month of July, the association La Tartana Teatro is in charge of reopening this space.
After 3 months of improvement works, everything looks great now and you can enjoy the puppet shows in a great setting like El Retiro park. This small outdoor amphitheater holds once again the most emblematic puppets of Madrid.
This renewed theatre begins this new course holding activities of Veranos de la Villa festival, which takes place all around Madrid during the months of July and August. During the 2nd and 3rd of August, this theatre will welcome two theater companies: La Chana with “Vulgarcito” and Hugo Suárez with “Cuentos Pequeños”.
Later on, recognized theater companies will present their puppet shows: for exemple, artists like Rodorín will present a show for children +4 years old. Also, Danish Álex Barti, specialized in string puppets will present his work with Mr. Barti: this puppet works with more than 40 strings. He is an eccentric musician, classical pianist, a rock star and a flamenco passionate, all in one. Undoubtedly, an extraordinary work.
And although these are some samples, please note that next August 11th it’s the date of the return of the Summer Puppet Festival, the Festival de Títeres de Verano. You will enjoy the classic and recognized associations like La Tartana (with decades of experience) and the return to the stage of El Teatro association, long time after their last show (they didn’t perform since the 60s).
In order to getting to know the origins of this theatre in El Retiro, we must go back to the 17th Century. The original theatre was demolished back in the 60s when it was substituted by a new wooden theatre conceived by Francisco Porras, one of the most important puppeteers of Spain, who has built more than 600 puppets. In 1994, the association Titirilandia managed this theatre until the last 31rd August, when the contract with the City Council ended and the improvement works started with a 20,000 € budget, very necessary after more than 10 years without any renovation. Hope you enjoy it!
